Our North London Forensic Service treats and cares for people in the criminal justice system who have mental health conditions. We also provide one of the largest eating disorders services in England, as well as drug and alcohol services, and mental health liaison services at Barnet Hospital and the North Middlesex University Hospital.

Job overview

Our team work as part of a multidisciplinary team situated in the Dennis Scott Unit at the Edgware Community Hospital. This service is an integral part of the local adult mental health care pathway and works in partnership with key stakeholders. The post is currently for full time (37.5 Hours).

Main duties of the job

As a Band 5 Nurse, you will undertake responsibility for co-ordinating shifts, assessing patients and developing plans of care. You will work with colleagues in the multidisciplinary team to identify risks behaviours, appropriate interventions and barriers to discharge from hospital. You will have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to enable effective communication to the multidisciplinary team and other agencies involved in care delivery.

We are looking for registered mental health nurses (student Nurses due to be Registered Nurses can also apply), who enjoy working in a dynamic and challenging environment. You would remain focused on enabling and empowering staff to deliver high quality patient care & focused outcomes. You must be able to work flexibly and efficiently within the MDT and have excellent communication skills.

Education and qualification

Essential criteria
  • Student Nurses completing their Mental Health Nursing Programme.
  • RMN or Enrolled Nurse (Mental Health)
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of a structured preceptorship programme
  • Completion of a mentorship programme.

Experience and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Working knowledge of MHA 1983.
  • Identify, initiate and manage effective practice in a patient centered way.
  • Knowledge of implementing clinical Policies and Procedures.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in an acute inpatient environment

Skills and abilities

Essential criteria
  • Able to participate in effective teamwork.
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of the personal and clinical needs of individual service users, their relatives and carers.
  • Ability to negotiate and influence.
  • Ability to effectively run the ward as and when necessary.
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of Positive Behavior Support principles.
  • Knowledge or experience of quality improvement processes
