Our North London Forensic Service treats and cares for people in the criminal justice system who have mental health conditions. We also provide one of the largest eating disorders services in England, as well as drug and alcohol services, and mental health liaison services at Barnet Hospital and the North Middlesex University Hospital.

Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic dietitian to join our team of innovative dietitians dedicated to adult dietetics. The Mental Health Nutrition and Dietetics Department is made up of recognised experts in nutrition and diet therapy to serve our diverse local communities for those with mental health problems. We work to promote health and well being through good nutrition on an individual, community and population level using up to date evidence based principles.

The Specialist forensic Mental Health dietitian is responsible for the provision of a highly specialist dietetic service for patients within NLFS (North London Forensic Service). The post holder manages a complex and diverse workload in the hospital and clinic setting, is responsible for clinical supervision of two band 6 mental health dietitians and clinical decisions in uni- and multi-disciplinary settings

Main duties of the job

The post holder will utilise an extensive and highly specialist knowledge within this specialist dietetic field and demonstrate the application of a wide range of behavioural skills in the one to one and group context. They are an essential member of the Nutrition and Dietetics team.

There will be opportunities to support student dietitians, delivery of training sessions, resource and guideline development and contribute to project work.

The post holder will have had previous clinical experience of providing a variety of therapeutic diets for adults in the community. Good communication and teaching skills are essential, and the post holder must be able to prioritise tasks, manage their time effectively and be able to lead and work flexibly within the team

Essential criteria
  • BSc Nutrition & Dietetics degree or equivalent
  • State Registration in Dietetics (HPC).
  • Study to Masters level or equivalent training and experience
  • Evidence of participating in specialist continuing professional development e.g.


Essential criteria
  • Over 3 years’ experience of working as a dietitian
  • At least 1 years’ experience of working as a dietitian in mental health
  • Nutrition Education and/or training of:

  • Advanced communication skills including the ability to participate in high level meetings regarding either patient care or clinical strategy
  • Ability to evaluate work and undertake research and audit projects
  • Basic skills in Word, Excel and Powerpoint
