Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust is responsible for providing mental health services for people of all ages across the London Boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey, as well as providing some specialist services across the whole of North London and beyond. Since January 2011, the Trust also provides adult and children’s community health services in Enfield, following the transfer of Enfield Community Services from NHS Enfield.

Job overview

This is a new post created to provide additional medical input into the St Ann’s Eating Disorders Service after restructuring and expansion of the range of services provided. The post-holder will have shared responsibility with the existing Consultant Psychiatrists within the service for providing a comprehensive eating disorders services for the commissioning bodies.

The post-holder will be jointly responsible for the assessment and medical management of patients receiving out-patient and day-patient treatment with other doctors within the service.

Main duties of the job

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Carrying out new psychiatric assessments.


  • Providing psychiatric and medical monitoring (reviewing bloods and ECGs) of patients in treatment within the out-patient and day-patient services.


  • Providing leadership and supervision to the multidisciplinary team (MDT) and attending all the MDT planned meetings.


  • Liaising with referrers and providing occasional assessments in other general or psychiatric hospitals as required.


  • Working collaboratively with primary and secondary care services and arranging and chairing professionals’ meetings to manage mutual patients. Participating in the multi-Marsipan meetings with numerous general hospitals within the catchment area.


  • Providing information to the managers on the activity of the service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities continued...

  • Providing reciprocal cover for annual and other leave with the other Consultants in the unit (2.6 full time consultant psychiatrists across the whole eating disorder service in addition to the advertised post). This includes providing cover for the in-patient unit. Cover for Consultant leave needs to be agreed by other Consultant colleagues.
  • This post does not involve participating in the General Psychiatry Consultant on-call rota. The post-holder could opt-in by agreement with the Clinical Director.


  • Maintaining and updating clinical knowledge specific to the post and participating in Continuous Professional Development (CPD). There are 10 days of study leave every year granted for CPD in addition to the weekly 2.5 SPA.


  • Continuing to continually improve the service and working in collaboration with the MDT to achieve this. Also participating in the monthly Clinical Improvement Group within the service.


  • Participating in the local St Ann’s weekly academic programme and monthly Consultant Balint group that offers peer support. There are also high-risk forums held in each borough within the Trust.


  • The post-holder can join the existing peer support group within the eating disorders service or make their own arrangements for peer support.


  • The post-holder is welcome to develop a special interest within the eating disorders field for instance in an area that is being currently developed by the service (e.g. Co-morbid diabetes service, comorbid gastrointestinal disorders service, co-morbid ASD service).


  • Supervising trainees.

Person specification

Qualifications & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Within six months of obtaining a CCT or on the GMC Specialist Register
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent
  • Experience of acute psychiatric inpatient work
  • Training and experience in General Adult Psychiatry
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Section 12 Approved and an Approved Clinician
  • Registered for the Continuing Professional Development Programme in the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Membership of a Medical Defence Union
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in the diagnosis and management of patients with an array of eating disorders
  • Experience of physical health monitoring in the context of eating disorders
  • Knowledge of the full range of effective therapeutic techniques to include Psychoeducation, medication and Psychological Therapies including CBT
  • Teaching (Experience in Teaching)
