Occupational Therapist - Band 5

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and innovative Occupational Therapist to work within the healthcare team at HMP Pentonville. This post provides input to both the inpatient and wellbeing centre departments within healthcare providing an important link between the two. Both aspects of this post are well supported by the presence of Senior OT staff in both units.

The successful candidate will be joining the wider health and wellbeing team comprising of Occupational Therapist’s, psychologists and substance misuse workers who are working toward embedding therapeutic principles into the healthcare provision within the prison.  The post holder will be supported to maintain and develop the OT role within the inpatient multi-disciplinary team. They will have opportunity to develop skills in a range of therapeutic groups and individual interventions.

The Occupational Therapy service within HMP Pentonville was established 4 years ago, and is one of the largest OT teams within a prison nationwide. As Occupational Therapy is newly emerging as a role within prison healthcare settings, the team have been keen to use the service to platform how Occupational therapy can improve the life of prisoners.  The team was shortlisted for an award for best team in secure services 2016 and was awarded runner up in 2017.  We regularly contribute articles and presentations within local and national forums.

This role provides opportunity to work within a diverse and interesting service for prisoners with increased support needs, including those with mental health issues, learning disabilities, personality disorders and physical health concerns.  The postholder will receive regular individual supervision to support their practice, as well as opportunities to engage in reflective practice groups with the wider healthcare team at HMP Pentonville.

The team has a strong emphasis on support and training with regular in-house training opportunities as well as from external providers. Recent external trainings received by the team have been in hearing voices, working with trauma, mindfulness teacher training and personality disorder.

As part of the Forensic Occupational Therapy team within the wider Barnet Enfield and Haringey mental health trust there will be opportunity to develop and maintain links with other Occupational Therapists across the service. This includes those working within prisons, young offender units and secure hospital services.

This area of work can be as rewarding as it is challenging and requires a team player who can be adaptable, think on their feet and maintain a sense of humour.  The successful candidate will be joining an enthusiastic team working towards improving activity and increasing well-being to the varied and interesting prison population.
