Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust (BEH) provides healthcare services locally, regionally and nationally. Our North London Forensic Service treats and cares for people in the criminal justice system who have mental health conditions. We also provide one of the largest eating disorders services in England, as well as drug and alcohol services, and mental health liaison services at Barnet Hospital and the North Middlesex University Hospital.

Job overview

An exciting secondment opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Research Assistant to work within the Research & Development delivery teams for Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust (BEH). This post is a 6-month secondment. As a member of R&D, the post holder’s time will be split between:

· Supporting the delivery of the Trusts’ ongoing portfolio of clinical research studies – working on a variety of studies in mental health, dementia, and other related health fields.

· To assist the R&D Director with setting up several research studies and projects, specifically within Forensics Service.

We are looking for a proactive person who is passionate, dependable, able to work independently as well as part of a dynamic team, and possess good interpersonal and communication skills. It’s expected that applicants will have some working knowledge and understanding of clinical research, but this post is an opportunity to build on their existing knowledge and gain further experience within the research setting.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to take a proactive role in the research infrastructure to supports commercial and non-commercial studies at BEH. This includes: working with clinical services, to identify, screen, and recruit potential study participants; Carrying out study baseline, follow up, and monitoring visits, with study participants, to collect study specific data and ensure that the research undertaken in the BEH NHS Trust is of the highest standard and in accordance with ICH Good Clinical Practice and other relevant guidelines.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • Good first degree (in Psychology or health related field), or relevant experience in a research setting
Desirable criteria
  • MSc in Psychology or other health related field
  • Good clinical Practice certificate

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Good knowledge of the principles of research.
  • Knowledge of the processes that are required to conduct research in the NHS (e.g. gaining a favorable ethical opinion, Trust R&D approval).
  • Experience of working with MS Office in particular MS Excel, as well as Word, Outlook, PowerPoint.
Desirable criteria
  • Certification and experience in standard assessment scales like PANNS and HAM-D
  • Knowledge of the governance standards that apply to research in the NHS (e.g. Medicines for Human Use Clinical Trials Regulations).
  • Experience of managing projects.
