Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust is responsible for providing mental health services for people of all ages across the London Boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey, as well as providing some specialist services across the whole of North London and beyond. Since January 2011, the Trust also provides adult and children’s community health services in Enfield, following the transfer of Enfield Community Services from NHS Enfield.

Job overview

The post offered is that of a Consultant Psychiatrist split between the Wellbeing Clinic and the Primary Care Link Working team.

The post will include overseeing the six Advanced Clinical Practitioners ACP) based in the Primary Care Networks (PCN’s), and 1 ACP in the Link working team.

This role will support the standalone Wellbeing clients with reviews while also supporting any new referrals for ongoing standalone support within the Wellbeing Clinic

Additionally, the postholder will be working to develop and support the ‘front door’ currently known as the Primary Care Link working team, to review and advise primary care colleagues on medication and other medically related queries.

This post is initially for 12 months, as part of the Community Transformation pilots within Barnet.

Main duties of the job

The post offered is that of Consultant Psychiatrist in Primary Care working in both the community Wellbeing Clinic and the Primary Care Link Working teams.  In addition to this post, the role will require the supervision of ACP’s for their MSc courses, whilst they are based in the PCN’s and our Link Working Team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Objectives of the post

  • The Consultant will provide leadership and supervision for a multidisciplinary community Primary Care Link Working and Wellbeing teams in Barnet.
  • The Consultant will have responsibility for the diagnostic assessment and treatment of adult psychiatric patients from the designated primary care PCN’s and inpatient wards, on discharge. There will be a one day a week commitment to the ACP supervision and where appropriate this can be delegated to trainees/nurse prescribers under the supervision of the Consultant.
  • The Consultant will ensure the review and care of the Wellbeing patients.
  • To ensure the timely assessment, treatment and reviews of people with mental health needs with appropriate referrals into specialized secondary care support as required.
  • To promote mental health and independence for all people
  • To provide clinical and professional leadership in the service
  • To provide support to carers and relatives of people, including them wherever possible and in someone’s care plans.
  • To facilitate access to a range of community orientated services to those who may need them.
  • To liaise effectively with other Trust services and external partner agencies in the best interests of patients
  • To provide a service of the highest quality, within the limits of our resources
  • To promote high quality management of psychiatric patients by non-medical staff

Qualifications & Experience

Essential criteria
  • On the General Medical Council Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining a CCT
  • Training and clinical expertise in assessment, diagnosis and management of older (≥65) adults with functional, organic and mental disorders
  • Knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act and Safeguarding Procedures
  • Excellent clinical skills with experience of Community Psychiatric assessments
  • Section 12 MHA Approved and an Approved Clinician
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists UK or equivalent
  • Additional degree or equivalent
  • Registered for the Continuing Professional Development Programme of the Royal College of Psychiatrists UK
  • Membership of a Medical Defence Organisation
  • Experience in teaching with ability to use a wide range of teaching techniques and audio-visual aids
  • Clinical supervision skills training
